City of Calgary Drought

Last summer it was reported to ABRA management that people had chinch bug infestations. Our maintenance crew conducted various tests and found no evidence of an infestation. The reason for the patchy brown grass in the access ways was due to the drought conditions that the city was and is currently facing.

The ABRA uses integrated pest management, which is a process that is used to control pest populations while minimizing the impacts on people and the surrounding environment. We always start with the least harmful methods first, and so any sort of chemical treatment is used as a last resort.

There are swales that run to the lake so any run off from using pesticides/herbicides will go directly into the lake which can have an extremely negative impact on the ecosystem.

Given the current drought situation, it’s very important to plan ahead and understand that we will likely need to conserve water, which means that water restrictions may be put into place again.
