Prussian Carp have been confirmed in our lake.

While Auburn Bay Lake is already home to Grass Carp, these are not the same fish.

🐟 Grass Carp

The ABRA introduced the Grass Carp through the Government of Alberta more than a decade ago as part of an aquatic weed management program. They are sterile, meaning they cannot reproduce. As these fish reach the end of their natural lifespan, they will gradually disappear from the lake. They were intentionally stocked to help manage aquatic vegetation and are a permitted species in our lake. This program no longer exists today.

The grass carp are significantly larger than prussian carp and you will typically see them schooling and “sunning” at the surface in shallower water.

⚠️ Prussian Carp

Prussian Carp are an invasive species that reproduce rapidly and compete with other fish for food and habitat. They disturb the lake bottom while feeding, reducing water clarity and impacting the overall health of the ecosystem. Unlike the sterile Grass Carp, Prussian Carp can quickly establish large populations if left unmanaged.

If you catch a Prussian Carp:

❌ Do NOT release it back into the lake.
✅ Humanely kill it and dispose of it properly. Alberta regulations prohibit releasing live Prussian Carp back into the water.

Help protect Auburn Bay Lake

🎣 It is illegal to release fish into Auburn Bay Lake. The only fish intentionally stocked in the lake today are trout, and the existing sterile Grass Carp that were introduced through a former provincial weed management program.

🐠 We know there’s also a koi fish swimming around the lake! While it may look beautiful, it doesn’t belong there. Our team has been actively trying to catch this elusive escape artist—but so far, it has managed to stay one step ahead of us! Releasing aquarium or pet fish into lakes is illegal and can introduce diseases, disrupt ecosystems, and create long-term environmental problems.

🐟 Caught a fish you aren’t sure about? If possible, keep it with you and let one of our staff members know. We’d be happy to come take a look and help identify it.

Some photos of Grass Carp and Prussian Carp are available below. If you hover over the picture, or click on one, it will tell you which type of fish it is!
