ABRA Beach Paw Patrol Program

The Beach Paw Patrol program was introduced in the spring of 2024 on a trial basis. It’s purpose was to help mitigate the presence of birds on and around the lake.

The program ended up being a huge success so we’re excited to bring it back in 2025! Applications will open up in mid-March so keep an eye out! Once applications open up, we will accept them on a first-come first-served basis.

Why do we want to mitigate the presence of birds?

Wild birds can often spread disease, viruses, bacteria and parasites. The most common ones include Salmonella, E. Coli, Cryptosporidium, Swimmer’s Itch and Avian Influenza. All of these are most commonly spread through contact with bird droppings.

Did you know that on average, Canada Geese defecate every 12 minutes.

Our lake tends to be a hot spot for migrating birds who need a rest. A lot of the bird droppings have the potential to end up in the lake, which is why we try to mitigate their presence.

What about dog waste?

Volunteers are required to sign a waiver which holds them responsible for cleaning up their pets waste. If they fail to do so, they can be permanently removed from the program.

FAQ

Only dogs that are part of the Beach Paw Patrol program are able to access the park. They’re only permitted to be in the park during their scheduled timeslots, all of which are outside of normal operating hours.

In order to become part of the Beach Paw Patrol program you need to submit your application once it goes live. They are accepted on a first come first served basis, so please be advised that not all applicants will be able to enter the program.

The application form will outline all of the requirements, however some of those requirements include:

  • Dogs must be 6 months of age or older.
  • Dogs must be fully vaccinated
  • Dogs must be licensed by the City of Calgary
  • Dogs must be friendly to other dogs and people with no history of aggression.
  • and more!

The length of the program is entirely dependant on weather. We will start up once the ice on the lake is melting as that is when the migrating birds tend to show up and will end once the lake begins to freeze over for the season.
